Sewing machines are said to have first come into existence way back in the late 1700’s. To be sure, if you had one of those today you would have a very valuable asset. If your passion is to collect the classics and the oldies, then you are most certainly aware of the value of those antique models made prior to 1900, and those considered to be vintage models which were made after the year 1900. If you do not collect them and happen to have one stowed away in a closet, you may be thrilled to learn just how valuable that old machine is.

But, keep in mind that the value of this classic will depend on what kind of condition it is in. It is certainly going to be worth a lot more if it is in pretty good condition and all of its parts are in working order. However, the older the sewing machine is the more unlikely it is going to be that this will be the case.

Fortunately, finding working antique sewing machine parts is not always a dead end; particularly with such a wide variety of things available over the internet today. You can generally come across a part for your machine just by looking around auction sites like eBay, or even some of the online classified ad web sites. Be cautious with some of the ad sites though – not everyone online is trustworthy as you and I are.

To go along with that, it might be a good idea to make a phone call to the manufacturer of the machine; that is, if they are still in business. If they are, and you have the model number, they may have, or know where you can get parts for it. There is a very good likelihood that they will be able to at least point you in the right direction. Considering that you haven’t got anything to lose, it’s worth giving it a shot, right?

Another thing you can try is to make it a point to visit your local garage sales to see if anybody has some old sewing machines or parts they want to get rid of. There is no telling what might be available to you at a garage sale, and it is not uncommon for someone to have what they consider to be just an old piece of junk that they got from a friend or relative, and they don’t even recognize it to be a hidden treasure just waiting for a new appreciative owner; somebody just like you!

· Leave it un-threaded and with no bobbin and run the machine, stitching on some tissue paper, just to get the feel and motivation to sew and to get the machine moving again.

· If using oil, leave the tissue paper under the lowered presser foot until you are ready to sew. The tissue paper will collect any excess oil.

· Dream up and draw your next sweatshirt design on paper while having a cup of tea.

· Pin the paper pattern on to the fabric, carefully checking the grain lines are correct, roll up (not fold) and put away carefully.

· On your next 14 minute sewing session appointment with yourself you can cut out the fabric.

· Be a little creative in one of your sessions. Practise using the fancy stitches on your sewing machine. If you do not have the sewing machine manual, write down in a notebook the best width and length to use, cut out a stitched sample and staple or glue in to the book for future reference. This will save you heaps of time at a later date when you want to use the stitches.

· Pin and stitch darts and press. Waist line darts are pressed to the centre of the garment and bust and elbow darts pressed downwards.

· Stitch in a zip.

· Stitch a test buttonhole first then stitch all the buttonholes onto your outfit.

· Tidy up your pattern box.

· Choose your next outfit to stitch and put the pattern in your bag so it is available next time you shop for fabric.

Now I have started the list you can add to it. We can sit down and sew when we know that all those little mending jobs are completed and our sewing machine is clean and ready to go.

Remember the old saw, “For want of a nail, the kingdom was lost”? It is that way in quilting. Use the wrong tool, or try to quilt without the correct tool, and your masterpiece could end up in the scrap bag.

In an attempt to keep fabric shredding to a minimum, here is an exhaustive list of items that every quilter needs:

1. Sewing machine – make sure it is good and hefty, and can stand up to being glared and cussed at. Even if I have to get an old refurbished sewing machine, I always look for one with a steel case. They do not melt as easily under such intense pressure.
2. Rotary cutter – or as I like to call it: Sharp Implement of Disaster. It looks like a pizza cutter but is five times as sharp. Very efficient at slicing through layers of fabric and tips of fingers. Even when using the 24″ x 3″ ruler as a cutting guide and safety device, the rotary cutter can skitter across 3″ of plastic quicker than bare feet on a hot sidewalk.
3. 24″ Ruler – used for cutting a straight line through and drawing long quilting lines on fabric. It is also supposed to protect your fingers from the rotary cutter while slicing through material, but at only ¼” thick, it does not do a very good job.
4. Some sort of finger protection. I have tried leather, duct tape and chain mail, but they are all either too bulky, too expensive, or too hard to work with.
5. Cutting mat – used with the rotary cutter to protect the work surface and keep the rotary blade from getting dull. It also does an excellent job at keeping blood off the work surface when the rotary cutter goes a-skitterin’.
6. First aid kit with butterfly bandages.

Think you have everything? Not quite. Here are four more priceless items to have that you will not see on any other “Quilting Supplies” list:

1. Needle nose pliers to use when the sewing machine needle decides to fall out of its clamp and jam up the works.
2. Wire cutters for obstinate needles that will not come out with the pliers.
3. Magnifying glass to hunt for needle bits that have fallen into the shuttle when wire cutters were used.
4. Safety goggles to protect your eyes from flying needle bits.

If I had had these four little items, I would not have had to replace a sewing machine (which was plastic), a window and a big chunk of front yard. That is another reason why I buy metal sewing machines: they hold up better when they go through a window and a-skitterin’ across the grass.

Now that you have all your sewing and safety equipment, do not forget to add fabric and have fun!

Sewing seamless cloths? Sounds unbelievable, right? But the fact is sleeves and necklines require traditional stitching with thread and needle. However, the Italian knitting technology produces beautiful designs that features fashion with basic function. The soft micro fibres utilized in these cloths need particular threads, and enhanced sewing technology for the elasticity.

The seamless clothing has transformed the overall worldwide production process. This technology can directly produce finished products, and lessens traditional process of the production. This leads to saving of production costs up to 40 percent compared to the customary knitting. The seamless knits are in tubular shape, which is laid-in elastic yarns, placed in the welt bands and prepared in the compressed areas.

Circular knitting machines were mostly used by underwear makers since the beginning of the circular knitting technology in early 19th century. But the manufacturers in Italy merged the reciprocation technology for tips and heels of socks with intarsia for swimwear, underwear and outerwear during 80s. The machine manufacturing company, Santoni in Brescia is currently leading the market; although other companies like Sangiacomo, Italy and Merz, Germany are also famous players in similar knitting machine technologies.

Within just three years, production of seamless underwear assortment reached nine percent of the total global production in this segment in year 2001, comparing two percent reached in the year 1998, with climb of 18 percent in 2003. In 2007, underwear industrial segment is likely to reach 35 percent, Santoni reports.

In context to the educational and training, the Santoni Group has been conducting courses at The Machina Fashion and Design Institute, based in Brescia. The courses are focused on software oriented designs, and on the machine developments. Santoni training centre has emerged as a work place for innovations and develop prototypes, which are checked by consumers and stylists, and will be manufactured and distributed in the open market.

Santoni tried its hands on making seamless pants and bras, however, the results were not so positive because the diameter of the machines permits only small sizes. Although, this resulted many interesting out-comes like frills, fringes and designs.

Threads

Because the main products like underwear, outerwear and swimwear are highly elastic, fine to very fine fabric, made of micro-fibres, required to be very extensible and soft.

All major sewing thread makers have developed appropriate products.

Alterfil has developed a 100 percent polyester texturized yarn “Alterfil T”, for needle and looper. The combination of Alterfil T and Alterfil B in the needle and looper is recommended.

The Coats has introduced Coats Eloflex, produced from Polybutylene terephthalate (P.B.T.). It is designed for elastic knitted fabrics, featuring best firmness and elasticity. This could be utilized for both under thread and needle.

GOtermann, Germany has introduced an eye-catching seam with a glowing metallic effect. The in-depth testing has depicted that using a 2 or 3 needle over-sew stitch, a mixture of the micro fibre thread ‘Piuma’ and the metal threads, GOtermann W 331, rolls out a excellent result.

It is skin-friendly, without resulting any irritation. The 127 available Piuma colors and 12 W 331 colors (in some cases multi-colored) produce a wide-range of color permutation.

Amann, Germany developed new innovative elastic sewing thread, “saba FLEX”. It is made from 100 percent PTT continuous thread, available in 2 variants, 80tex and 120tex for all kinds of elastic fabrics.

Reutex, Germany offers new elastic micro fibre thread for needle and looper, ‘Softex 120′.

Joining Options

Welding, bonding, and heat sealing are other options then customary sewing method. However, these options have their restrictions over elasticity. Framis Italia, based in ltaly, is well-known for its welding technology, “NoSo” that is based on bonding. It is bonding of two fabrics together. The bonding tape is implemented together with hot-air welding. Framis has recently launched latest portable machine EI Nino for hot-air welding.

Swiss manufacturer, Schips has introduced ultrasonic machines. The first machine is HS C51 WHE-F8, which is for hemming, second is the HS C52BCO, which continuously assembles two fabrics with a bonding tape, and third is HS C51 WFO that welds folded elastic to release garments.

Sewing Machines

Sewing machine makers did not overwhelmed on new technologies, as anticipated. However, few machine makers have taken initiatives to enhance the technologies. The initiatives towards user-friendliness and flexibility are remarkable.

. AMF Reece, based in Czech Republic, introduced a chain stitch buttonhole lingerie tucker machine, 5-4000 LT, to enhance finishing process of the flat seams and flat lock seams. The surplus flat lock seam is absorbed through the sensor control. The flat seam is cut and fully sewn on, and then cut-off flat lock chain is thrown into the squander.

. The Italian sewing machine maker, CF has introduced Rimoldi, which is well known for seamless sewing solutions. Its concept consists of seven resourceful machines. The product assortment includes, over lock machine Vega II with 1 or 2 needles, Fenix with 2 or 3 needles and its smaller imitation Mizar and Libra are particularly developed for lingerie. Over lock machine Lyra is a 1 and 2 needle a new inexpensive sewing machine. Gemini, a station with two self-governing, opposite heads, which coordinates to execute parallel binding, lace and elastic functions on both legs of briefs or panties.

. Yamato from Japan launched the VGS machine with extra higher transportation, affirmative feeding of the thread for needles and changing time of looper movements. This may result in raising the length of threads in the seam, making high elasticity. In case of seaming a T-shirt, the UTL will make the stitches automatically denser at the end of the sewing process and locks the seam.

. OOrkopp from Germany and Shanggong from China introduced three new machines for knitting, two high speed lock-stitch (GC8900-1/A/H and GC8900¬4-50) and the high speed over-lock machine SG700/704/714/716. The other has a degree of difference in feeding with micro alteration according to the kind of fabric sewn

. Union Special, Germany, introduced many machines for seamless garments; among these a unique flat seaming machine with 4 needles thread feed off the arm with top cover thread for overlapped joining processes. The photocell controls the thread-chain-cutter at the back of the foot-presser.

. Pegasus, Japan, introduced new special machine to bind tape over seamless garments, W562-020Bx232/ FT141/MD641/Y. It is 2-needle flatbed, interlock stitching machine. Its top-cover thread has a fabric edge trimmer, with elastic lace feeder, holding stepping motor driven metering device and automatic tape/thread cutter.

. Schips introduced a blend of two machines, HS C3G/B to attach bindings simultaneously form right to left leg.

Conclusion

Seamless products have a share in fashion and functional garment market, and it is not bounded to only underwear segment. The new evolution is emerging into outerwear product assortments.

Seam is the joint between the two parts of a garment. For the perfect fitting and look of the garment seam appearance and its strength has to be proper. Many factors like appropriate sewing, needle size and its type, fabrics used and its weight, stitches done on the garment, seam construction and tension level of thread influences the strength of seam.

Seam strength testing is basically an examination of the amount of pressure required to tear or break the seam of the garment. Measurement of seam strength is a part of quality control procedure which is essential for garments. The fabrics are tested for it in the machine that checks the point at which the seam breakage occurs. There are many problems associated with the seam strength if there is any fault during making of seam, for instance- the seam and fabric splits at same point of time and sometimes the seam is safe but the fabric tears off :-

Various criteria associated with appropriate seam implementation:

Stitch and seam construction

The best available option of stitch to ensure strong seams is Locked stitch as in this stitch there is interlocking of the threads which increases the seam strength. There are various types of seam constructions, the list is as follows:-

a) Decorative Seam – As the name suggests this seam is done for decorating the garment. This is done on one or more than one layer of fabric through many rows of stitches sewn on them.

b) Super Imposed Seam – Superimposing the seam is the simplest and widely used type of seam construction. The border of one piece is kept on another piece of fabric, then sewn together.

c) Applied Seam – When some outside material other than the fabric itself like lace, patch, etc are sewn on the seam or edge of the garment, it is known as applied seam.

d) Bound Seam – This seam is also used for decorative purpose. Here the edges are attached by means of tapes or through self binding.

e) Single Ply Construction Seam – This seam is constructed from single layer or piece of fabric. Generally used for manufacturing belts and belts loops.

f) Edge Neatening – Here the edges of the fabric are trimmed, hemmed and folded through stitches.

g) Lapped Seam – This is the strongest type of seam usually used for denims. Here the seam is done on the fabrics overlapped.

Sewing needle

There are many factors associated with sewing needle which are important from the viewpoint for better seam strength and appearance. The diameter of the needle, the shape of its tip and size of the eye hole of the needle affects the seam construction of the garment. The size of the eye hole of the needle should be in accordance with the thickness of the thread. If the needle hole is smaller and does not provide effortless passing of the thread then there is the possibility of wearing out of the thread during use of the garment. And if the needle hole is larger and the thread is finer than the level required, mis-stitch might result due to low quality of loop formation and thread control. Thus proper ratio of size and type of sewing needle and thread is required. Also to avoid harm to the fabric due to excessive heating of needles while stitching special needles have been developed like- titanium nitride coated needle.

Fabric type and weight

Seam strength and its performance also depends upon the various characteristics of fabrics used. The material of the fabric, the type of fabric weave, thread count, the pattern positioning, type of yarn and seam direction.

Thread type, construction, size and finish

The type of the thread used, its construction, size and finishing influences the seam strength of the garment. There are many types of threads like cotton thread, polyester thread, silk threads, etc. It is a known thing that polyester thread is more durable than cotton thread. However the type of thread used depends upon the fabrics being used, for eg.- for silk fabrics silk thread is used.

There are different types of thread construction like multifilament, core, spun, textured, etc. Continuous filament core threads provide better seam strength compared to other construction of threads. Different thread sizes are available in market but finest thread are preferred more as longer length of finer threads can be wind around the lockstitch machine and they do not acquire much space in the seam. This avoids seam puckering.

Sewing thread’s elasticity should match to the elasticity of the fabric used. Also the whole length of the thread should have equal elasticity level throughout its reel which ensures proper stitches. If it is not proper then it could result into tearing of fabric or thread breakage of the garment. Different fabrics require threads of different elasticity, for instance threads used for knitted, synthetic or woven fabrics are different.

Thread tension or Stitch balance

The sewing machine tension should be well adjusted in order to get good stitch. In case of loose thread tension while stitching, it would result into lower seam strength, and if thread tension is high then it might lead to puckering. It is advisable to set medium level of thread tension in sewing machines. Also the parts of the sewing machine should be well oiled and smooth enough to ensure lower loss of thread, smooth and flawless stitching or damage to the thread used.

Conclusion

Hence from the above mentioned factors essential if are put into consideration while manufacturing of seam of the garments, it would surely result into flawless garment production and better seam presentation and durability. For export houses these points are to be taken care of. The trick is to use matching needle type and size, thread finish, type, size and construction, type of seam construction and adjusting appropriate thread tension in accordance with the fabric type and weight also the method of stitching being used.

How to Thread a Sewing Machine

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Threading a sewing machine can be difficult at first. Once you learn how, though, the whole process will take you only a few seconds.
Instructions

* STEP 1: Raise the needle to its highest position by turning the handwheel toward you.
* STEP 2: Raise the presser foot. This will allow the thread to easily pass through the threading points and will prevent the machine needle from becoming unthreaded when you begin to stitch.
* STEP 3: Place a spool of thread on the spool pin located at the top of your sewing machine. If the spool pin runs horizontally, secure the spool of thread with the cap provided.
* STEP 4: Take hold of the thread end and pass it through the designated threading points on the top of the machine casing, then down toward the tension assembly. The tension assembly is located on the left side of the machine and controls the flow of thread.
* STEP 5: Take the thread under the tension assembly and back up through the next threading point at the top left of the machine. Make sure the thread has passed between two tension discs as well as the hook that may be attached to the left side of the tension dial.
* STEP 6: Push the thread end through the lever at the top left of the machine, if applicable, and down through the threading points at bottom left and above the needle.
* STEP 7: Thread the needle from the front or back of the needle. The threading direction will depend on your machine type.
* STEP 8: Pull a few inches of thread through the eye of the needle and pull the thread to your left.
* STEP 9: Insert a wound bobbin into the machine, if necessary, and close the throat plate. A few inches of bobbin thread should be pulled out to the right and sticking out from under the closed throat plate.
* STEP 10: Take hold of the thread that has been threaded through the machine needle.
* STEP 11: Rotate the handwheel toward you until the needle disappears into the bobbin case.
* STEP 12: Keep holding on to the thread and move the handwheel so the needle is once again at its highest position. As the needle rises, a loop of bobbin thread will come up as well.
* STEP 13: Pull the thread out toward your left to draw the bobbin thread loop further out of the bobbin case.
* STEP 14: Let the top thread go and pull the bobbin thread up until the end comes up. Pull the top and bottom threads under the presser foot and to the back and right of the machine.

Tips & Warnings

* Each style and model of sewing machine has its own requirements for threading. Use the instructions given here along with those provided with your machine. The owner's manual will usually include a threading diagram.
* Some styles of sewing machine have the threading points marked or may even have a threading diagram printed on the machine itself.
* Detailed instructions on winding and inserting the bobbin for a specific machine can be found in the machine owner's manual.
* Change the bobbin thread color when the thread spool color is changed.

#9 MOST COMMON PROBLEM:

OILING

There is a great deal of confusion as to whether, where, what with, and how much to oil Bernina machines. Your owner’s manual is indispensable in this regard. It not only tells you where and how much to oil, but also which oil to use.

First, a word about the oil itself. The safest oil to use is that which came with the machine, or that which can be purchased from a dealer. Bernina oil should say “Bernina” on the tube. If you have any doubts, for instance if you have purchased a used machine and the oil is suspect, it’s probably a good idea to throw that oil out and get some more. Bernina oil is very light in viscosity, and is almost clear.

The area that is most critical to oil is between the shuttle and the shuttle race. (See owners manual) Oil this about every second time the machine is used for any length of time. Just a half drop will do.

Over-oiling just makes a mess. It’s also a good idea to oil the pin on the shuttle that the bobbin case fits over, and a little on the bobbin case latch.

Having said the above about the type of oil, I will say that I personally have used Singer brand oil (found at any Wal-mart) with good results. “Three-in-One” oil or any kind of motor or vegetable oil should NOT be used on sewing machines at all. I have seen machines virtually ruined with the wrong kind of oil.

#3 MOST COMMON PROBLEM:

BURRED OR BLUNTED SHUTTLE POINT

A “burred” or blunted shuttle pont produces a variety of symptoms. There may be occasional or irregular skipping of some of the stitches. Or, the thread may periodically shred or even break. Sometimes there will be small loops of thread on the underside of the fabric.

The “shuttle point” refers to the area on the shuttle pictured below that is directly behind the needle. It is literally sharply pointed in order to pick up the thread loop as the shuttle passes behind the needle. Because of the close tolerances of the Bernina, or due to using “knit” needles like the Singer Yellow Band, or excessive pulling on the fabric as you sew, sometimes the sharp point becomes burred, blunted or even bent. This causes the thread to hang on the shuttle rather than passing smoothly around it. The problem can sometimes be detected with the naked eye, but a surer method is to stroke the shuttle point top, bottom, and sides with your finger. Any burr or roughness will quickly be detected.

If a rough spot is detected, usually it can be smoothed, saving the considerable expense of a new shuttle. I use a Dremel tool with a rubber wheel but extreme care must be taken to not blunt the shuttle point or change the basic shape. A safer method is to use 600 grit or finer sandpaper, rubbing lightly in the same direction of the shuttle point.
